URGENT - Update to free school meal entitlement options for families - please respond

Dear Families,

The Government has announced that it is possible for families, entitled to free school meals, to receive a £15 weekly voucher instead of packed lunches. One voucher per child.

Electronic vouchers can be spent at the following supermarkets: Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose and M&S, with the government  working to get more shops to join the scheme as soon as possible. 

Families can receive their vouchers electronically or as a gift card. If families choose an electronic code, the e-code can then be exchanged for a gift card for the supermarket of your choice from the list above. If families do not have access to the internet school can arrange for the voucher to be sent to you, but families will have to let us know the supermarket, so the correct voucher can be bought. Each eligible child will receive £15.

Once families have received their voucher, they will be able to redeem them in-store at the selected retailer by either:

presenting the voucher on a smartphone or tablet
presenting a paper copy of the voucher

Families are free to select the most appropriate food and drink for their child. When selecting products, we encourage families to consider health and nutrition. The School Food Standards may act as a useful guide for families.

The vouchers should not be redeemed for any age-restricted items, such as alcohol, cigarettes or lottery tickets.

There are a number of online resources available to support families in preparing healthy and nutritious food, including on the NHS Eat Well website.

The scheme comes into operation on 20th April and is for term time only. In order to process the vouchers we would need families to complete the following information: If we do not hear by 2 pm Thursday 2nd April we will not be able to process vouchers in time for 20th April.

At Barlow Hall we will try to continue to provide packed lunches for families that prefer this.
