PE and Sport

Curriculum Intent:

The aim of our PE curriculum is for children to develop the essential skills to prepare them for healthy and active lives during and beyond primary school. We aim to promote a positive experience of physical education, school sport and physical activity.

Our broad and balanced PE curriculum aims to:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities,
  • sustain physical activity for sustained periods of time,
  • engage pupils in competitive sports and activities,
  • teach pupils how to lead healthy, active lives.

Our Implementation

Our long plan comprises specifically chosen units of PE that build upon skills and knowledge from EYFS through to KS2. These are taught throughout the year to ensure that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Pupils take part in two PE lessons each week. This is in addition to other opportunities to be active during and after the school day. PE lessons in school are delivered by our teaching staff and Sports Coaches. Our sports coaches also support active sessions, activities and clubs during lunchtime and after school.

Our curriculum develops 7 key skills from EYFS to KS2:

  • Non-locomotor
  • Locomotor
  • Object manipulation
  • Implement manipulation
  • Strategic thinking
  • Combinations
  • Expressive and interpretative

To support the teaching and learning of these key skills at Barlow Hall, we use Primary PE Passport. This scheme provides lesson planning in line with the National Curriculum. We have a focus on swimming in Year 4, where pupils are taught by swimming specialists in a purpose built facility.

All pupils participate in the Daily Mile to further develop their enjoyment of being physically active. The aim of the Daily Mile is to improve the physical, social, emotional and mental health and wellbeing of our pupils, regardless of age, ability or personal circumstances. Children access this at their own pace, in the fresh air, with their friends.

Children are regularly invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Impact

At Barlow Hall we believe our approach to teaching PE will allow the children to progress in the key skills outlined above. Through a balance of individual, paired and group activities; teaching of PE at Barlow Hall incorporates the needs of every pupil., where all achievements are valued. Lessons will also develop a pupil’s ability to work independently, respond appropriately to others and develop their skills of teamwork and communication.
